Our client is an organization in the Milwaukee area looking for a Manager of Tax Operations. Our client is looking for someone with an accounting and tax foundation who brings strong project management, operational leadership, and process improvement skills. This is not a traditional technical tax role. This individual will oversee the administration of a large portfolio of qualified settlement funds while leading a team and building the processes, systems, and infrastructure needed to support a growing function.

The Manager, Tax Operations will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the tax administration and ongoing management of a portfolio throughout their lifecycle.
  • Maintain visibility across the entire portfolio, ensuring deadlines, deliverables, filings, and follow-up items are completed accurately and timely.
  • Oversee fund accounting activities, including monitoring account activity, interest income, and other financial information associated with each settlement fund.
  • Coordinate and oversee the preparation and filing of required tax returns and related documentation.
  • Lead and develop a small team responsible for supporting tax administration and portfolio management activities.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for clients and internal stakeholders, providing responsive service and effectively communicating the status of engagements.
  • Partner cross-functionally to gather financial, legal, and operational information necessary to administer each fund.
  • Exercise sound judgment and determine appropriate next steps when information is incomplete, priorities shift, or unique situations arise.
  • Manage multiple concurrent deadlines and proactively identify potential issues before they impact clients or deliverables.
  • Develop reporting and tracking tools that provide greater visibility into the status, deadlines, and next steps across the portfolio.
  • Evaluate existing software, systems, and workflows and identify opportunities to improve scalability, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Design and implement standardized processes, procedures, and internal controls for the tax operations function.
  • Evaluate staffing needs, team responsibilities, and workflows as the portfolio and department continue to grow.
  • Drive automation and technology initiatives that reduce manual work and improve the overall administration of settlement fund engagements.
  • Build a scalable operating model rather than simply maintaining existing processes.
  • Support additional operational, accounting, tax, and strategic initiatives as needed.

The Manager, Tax Operations will possess the following:

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field required.
  • Strong accounting and tax foundation with experience managing complex financial or tax-related processes.
  • Experience managing a large portfolio of clients, accounts, engagements, projects, or other concurrent workstreams strongly preferred.
  • Previous leadership experience with the ability to coach, develop, and effectively allocate work across a team.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to track numerous deadlines, dependencies, and deliverables simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated process improvement experience with the ability to build and enhance workflows, systems, and procedures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions when information is incomplete.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
  • Strong client service and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate across accounting, tax, legal, operations, and other functional areas.
  • Technology-oriented mindset with an interest in improving software utilization, automation, reporting, and workflow efficiency.
  • Comfortable operating in an evolving environment with the autonomy to develop and improve how a function operates.
  • Experience with qualified settlement funds, fund administration, fiduciary accounting, tax operations, or a related area is a plus.
