Executive Search Success Story: Using the Hogan Assessment to Support CEO Selection

By: | September 4, 2026

How Truity Partners helped a Board of Directors gain deeper insight into four CEO finalists, bringing greater clarity, objectivity, and confidence to a critical leadership decision.

Hiring a new CEO is one of the most critical decisions a Board can make. Recently, a Board of Directors faced this challenge with four strong finalists – each with impressive but varied backgrounds and foundational skills. To gain deeper insights and support their decision-making, the Board engaged in the Hogan Assessment process for all four candidates.

Each finalist completed the full Hogan suite, and results were reviewed in detail with the Board of Directors. The insights provided went beyond traditional interview impressions, offering a more nuanced understanding of each candidate’s leadership strengths, potential derailers, and core motivators within the context of the specific needs of the organization.

These results proved particularly valuable between interview rounds. With the first round complete, the Hogan profiles helped the Board reframe and refine their views of each candidate – highlighting key differences in leadership approach, potential blind spots, habits in stressful conditions, and cultural fit that may not have been fully visible during initial conversations.

Even more importantly, the assessment generated areas to probe and the Board was provided with individualized follow-up questions for each candidate. These questions allowed interviewers to dig deeper into areas that weren’t fully aligned with the expectations of the CEO role – ensuring a more targeted and insightful final interview process.

Ultimately, the Hogan Assessment became a trusted tool in the Board’s decision-making process, bringing clarity and confidence to critical leadership selection.

More about the Hogan Assessments:

Hogan’s personality assessments were developed to evaluate all facets of personality – the bright side, the dark side, and the inside – and to provide employers with an objective lens through which to understand people. For decades, Hogan has demonstrated personality’s impact on organizational success. Hogan has also pioneered the use of personality assessments to improve workplace performance. As a result of their research and experience, the Hogan Assessments have solutions to address every important talent management initiative, from talent acquisition to executive development and everything in between. Simply put, the Hogan Assessments evaluate how and why people behave the way they do, resulting in the ability to know if people will align with your organization, if they will meet the job requirements, and how they will perform.
